Guest researchers at BASE in Berlin

In April 2024, Hannah Klaubert and Sergiu Novac have spent two weeks as guests of the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) in Berlin, Germany, in their Division of Social Science Research and International Cooperation.

As part of their stay, they presented parts of their ongoing research in the Nuclear Natures project. Sergiu Novac held a presentation on the production and circulation of cleared waste from nuclear decommissioning, titled ‘Free Waste, or Free from Waste: Controversies around the free measurement and release of very low-level nuclear waste from decommissioning in Germany’. Hannah Klaubert presented her work on the notion of a greenfield in nuclear decommissioning, with the title: ‘Dreams of Green Fields: A Cultural Analysis of the Term “grüne Wiese” in Nuclear Decommissioning in Germany’. Additionally, they actively participated in the Nuclear Memory Week, and the internal research colloquia of BASE.

We would hereby like to thank Dr. Sarah Glück from BASE for the invitation and to everyone we met during our stay for the enriching two weeks spent in Berlin!
